Zeitz MOCAA

TZeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) is a remarkable addition to the cultural landscape of Cape Town, South Africa. Opened in 2017, the museum is located in the historic Grain Silo Complex at the V&A Waterfront, and it is the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world. The museum’s collection and exhibitions focus on the diverse artistic traditions of the African continent and its diaspora, providing a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage with a global audience.

The museum building itself is an impressive work of architecture and design. The Grain Silo Complex was originally built in the early 20th century and was used to store grain for export. In 2013, the building was repurposed and transformed into a world-class museum by British architect Thomas Heatherwick. The centrepiece of the museum is a soaring atrium that was carved out of the silo’s concrete structure. The atrium is illuminated by a series of stunning light installations that create a dramatic and dynamic space for visitors to explore.

The museum’s collection includes over 100 galleries and exhibition spaces spread over nine floors, showcasing a wide range of contemporary art from across the African continent and its diaspora. The permanent collection features works by some of the most celebrated contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora, including Marlene Dumas, Kendell Geers, William Kentridge, and Yinka Shonibare, among others. The museum also features temporary exhibitions, which offer a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work alongside established figures.

One of the museum’s most striking features is its commitment to creating a space for dialogue and exchange. The museum offers a range of public programming, including talks, workshops, and performances, which aim to engage visitors with the themes and ideas explored in the exhibitions. The museum also offers educational programming for schools and universities, providing a unique opportunity for young people to engage with contemporary African art and culture.

Zeitz MOCAA has quickly become one of Cape Town’s must-visit cultural attractions, attracting both local and international visitors. In addition to its impressive collection and exhibitions, the museum also boasts a range of amenities, including a café and a rooftop sculpture garden with panoramic views of the city and harbour. The museum’s location at the V&A Waterfront, one of Cape Town’s most popular tourist destinations, also makes it easily accessible for visitors.

Zeitz MOCAA is a remarkable institution that has made a significant contribution to the cultural landscape of Cape Town and the wider African continent. The museum’s commitment to showcasing contemporary African art and providing a space for dialogue and exchange has established it as a key player in the global art world. Whether you are an art enthusiast or a casual visitor, Zeitz MOCAA is an experience not to be missed.
